Bringing Progress to Girls’ Education in South Asia

December 9, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 1:30 pm

The Center for Universal Education at Brookings (CUE) cordially invites you to research presentations featuring this year’s Echidna Global Scholars from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The Scholars will present their final research and recommendations on addressing girls’ education challenges in their home countries. Launched in 2012, the Echidna Global Scholars Program is a five-month visiting fellowship that aims to build the research and analytical skills of girls’ education leaders from developing countries currently working to improve educational opportunities for the 62 million girls around the world who are without an education.

This two-part symposium will discuss the barriers of providing educational services to marginalized girls in tribal settings, the importance of acknowledging diverse in-country contexts for education service-delivery, strategies for improving the quality of education in madrasas for girls, and why, despite high secondary achievement rates, female labor market participation is low. Presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion and recommendations for ways forward to improve learning opportunities for girls globally. To conclude, questions will be taken from the audience.
